I don't own this promo, but it is listed on discogs. I think the catalogue number doesn't look like a 1 at the end, but since there is no other MTB001 it makes sense. Then this would be the first promo ever released. Martina's name is written as M.T.B.

1. Need One (radio edit) 3:21
2. Need One (album version) 3:55

This promo CD is a CDR and comes in a flat plastic cover with a simple paper insert. The CDR has the title and tracks printed on it. My copy also has a sticker on the pastic outside with the release date. A similar packaged promo CD of Need One with two remixes was released later (see below). Although it says "new mix" on the CD cover it is the same radio edit and album version as released later.

03. Soul Food 5:30
04. Too Tough To Die 3:56
05. Ragga 3:16
06. Stevie's 4:31

This promo CD contains six tracks form the upcoming solo album. It comes in a flat paper cover with a sticker on the back with the song titles (check out scans here). "Stevie's" is an early name for "Days Of A Gun". "Ragga" features Tricky in the beginning, "Too Tough To Die" is produced by David Holmes and contains a sample of Cleo Page's "Too Tough To Die" (as you can read here).
Two of the songs on this promo have a different mix than the final versions on the official release: the strings on Anything are different and the background chorus of Soul Food is missing. The 'Quixotic' promo CD (MTB 005, see below) has even more slightly different tracks.

> Martina: "Ragga" was originally going to be titled "Quixotic" because one of the meanings of quixotic is chivalrous to the point of impracticality, which is a fucking mouthful, isn't it? But it seemed to make sense. <

10. I Still Feel 4:32
11. Ilya 4:36
12. I Wanna Be There 2:32
13. Day's Of A Gun 4:32

The promo CD comes in a flat paper cover, check out scans here. Although it is only a promo copy it "contains copy control technology"! The order of tracks is slightly different from the final relase, also some names of the songs: 'Llya' instead of 'Ilya' and 'Day's Of A Gun' instead of 'Stevies (Day's Of A Gun)'.
And like the "Six Track Sampler" (see above) some of the songs on this promo have a different mix than the final versions. The strings on 'Anything' are different, the background vocals of 'Soul Food' are missing, 'I Still Feel' has a different sound and is one minute shorter. And 'I Wanna Be There' is about 30 seconds longer, it has an additional second verse. The same version can be found as a b-side on the 'Anything' single.
The CD also has a CD-Rom part with all the tracks as .wma files (for Windows Media Player).

> A clue to the making of this record as much as how it sounds, is in the album title. 'Quixotic' may be defined as being motivated by idealism that overlooks practical considerations, taking a romanticized view of life or simply acting on impulses. <

The date on the front cover (17/3/03) maybe suggests that this promo was released not around the release of 'Quixotic' (July), but a lot earlier!? I don't own this CD myself, so I don't know if the mixes are any different to the final album versions. The first song from the album, 'Intro' is missing.

> "I didn't want to start the album with a big-sounding rocky song," she explains. "Even though lyrically it's quite cryptic, it's also a bit too obvious." <

Check out more scans of the CD and booklet here. The booklet contains all the lyrics, you can read them here. The album is also released in the US with a different title, cover and trackorder (see below).
Martina wrote most of the songs with Amp 9) (Nick Bird, Alex McGowan and Steve Crittall). Tricky is involved in 5 tracks: Sandpaper Kisses (additional production), Ragga (lyrics, music, vocals, production, programming), I Still Feel (additional production), Ilya (programming) and Stevie's (producing). Also David Holmes produced two tracks (Too Tough To Die, I Wanna Be There: co-produced with Martina and Amp 9). Cath Coffey does backing vocals on some tracks, also Petra (from David Holmes' Free Association).
The European (?) version has a different catalogue number, although on the CD itself the number ISOM 34CD is printed. The French version has three bonus tracks:
14. Skyscraper
15. I Wanna Be There (Live at Bush Hall)
16. Too Tough To Die (Hot To Tape Mix)  (Soundcloud)
'Skycraper' is also a b-side of the 'Anything' single, while the remix of 'Too Tough To Die' is unreleased otherwise. Check out scans of this CD here
Check out some different versions of songs on early promo CDs (Six Track Sampler and Quixotic promo CD). 'Quixotic' was released in the US on July 27 with the title 'Anything' (confusingly a single in Europe), see below.

> Martina: "Most of the album is about the struggle between your desires and what's good for you. The emphasis is on desire, though. First person. The songs are actually in the moment, or just after the moment. Or, it's just about to happen. That's all I'm saying." <

> Anything originally came out in the UK last year with the title Quixotic. It's finally out in the States with a different track listing and three fewer songs. Why the change?
Well, I spoke to (label head) Christ Blackwell about that. He really loved the record, but he doesn't like long albums. It's a shame because those three songs are three of my favortie songs on the record, but in a way, it helps to keep the record fresh for me because it juggles things around a bit. <

This is the US version of Martina's debut album that was released last year in Europe with the name 'Quixotic' (see above). One track with Tricky's production from the European version is missing (Stevie's - Day's Of A Gun). The last track, 'Outro', is the same as 'Intro' on Quixotic. The cover is taken from the 'Anything' video (see videography), the packaging is a digipak, see scans here. Executive producers of this album are Chris Blackwell from Palm Pictures and Bruno Guez.

> What about the title? Did you think Amercians wouldn't know what "quixotic" meant?
[laughs] Don't take it personally! It's really more of an accessibilitiy thing. The word "quixotic" does not have an emotional resonance with people, whereas "anything" is extremely open. <

This single is only released for download. There are no b-sides, so I don't see much sense in this, as you can also download the song from the album. Anyway, you can buy the download here.

The tracks are reworked and stripped down. A lot of these versions result from live performances over the years. Some songs are new and not released before: Orchids, All Day, Kiss Kiss Kiss and Harpsichord Kiss. Strangely some songs have a different spelling than before, like Ilyah (Ilya) and Too Tuff To Die (Too Tough To Die).
You can listen to snipped of all the songs on Amazon. Martina herself talks about inspirations of the songs on the official website of Honest Jons Records.

01. Solitude 3:40

This is the first single of Martina since 2010! You can buy it at Bandcamp or listen on her official website or Soundcloud. The song was composed by Martina and Tiadiad, mixed by Rich Morel (with whom she recorded 'Millennial heart' that was released a few months later, see collaborations discography).

A four track EP called "MTB Continued" was announced to follow, but it isn't released yet.

> Born out of themes of internal and external discord, Solitude explores the journey through a troubled world and a reflection on human conflicts, the comfort and torment of solitude and the fragility of life’s balance. <
