"Tricky’s debut on Anti has an underlying attitude of tension and outspoken dissension. From the wash of metal-edged guitar discord behind the drum-and-bass thump of the EPs title track, to the aggro venom of the song “Divine Comedy”, the four songs capture elements of dark underground rap and lay them over a landscape of fractured techno beats and detached dissonance. Tricky has always defied being lumped into any specific genre, despite being revered by the press who have tried to categorize his music since day one. This is why Tricky has found the perfect home on Anti, a label that is about great artists making great recordings on their own terms without the trappings, pretense, or machinations of the entertainment establishment to come between them and, the true patron, the fan.

His debut CD Maxinquaye, an indescribable dark-edged, pop-centric hybrid of dance, soul, rap, ambient, dub, hip hop and blues, jumped on to the UK charts at #3 in late 1994.  The 1995 follow up Pre-Millennium Tension was more confrontational, his edgy rap styling more prominent.  Retaining his cut and paste production style, he mixed in an element of fury, adding more grooves, aggressive drums, and an in-your-face attitude. 1998 saw the release of Angels With Dirty Faces and soon after Juxtapose, on which he collaborated with hip-hop producer Grease, DJ Muggs and Mad Dog.  In-between his full length releases Tricky has continuously released EP’s and worked on countless remixes and collaborations with artists such as Bjork, PJ Harvey, Neneh Cherry, Elvis Costello and Portishead.

Like a clock that is slowly being wound too tightly, Mission Accomplished has an underlying tension of coils about to snap. It is a jagged confrontation, a ride full of shadowy contrasts beginning with the laid back mantra of the title track (with a borrowed line from Peter Gabriel’s “Big Time”), and continuing on to the whispery tune “Crazy Claws”, where Tricky’s vocals slither through the song in a crevice that is somewhere between sensual and psychotic. “Tricky Vs Lynx” finds the tension unwinding in a barrage of punchy rhythmic speed rap, grounded by a thick bass line groove, and finally during the Polygram aimed rant “Divine Comedy”, the coil snaps and breaks.

With each release this prolific artist puts out, his music turns another corner, experimenting with volatile combinations of genre hopping crossbreeding. Like all of Tricky’s work, this CD follows suite. Mission Accomplished is both an assault and a caress, a slap and a stroke."
